Biography of Kostas Martakis
In a short period of time, Kostas Martakis has accomplished a tremendous amount of success in his bright and promising singing career. People from all over the world have been mesmerized by his numerous extraordinary qualities: an amazing voice, indescribable beauty and a charismatic character. He has the whole package, as they say, which is rare to find altogether in one person.
Kostas Martakis was born on May 25, 1984 in Pireaus, a suburb of Athens. He was an adorable, blonde-haired, pale-skinned, blue-eyed baby. He has an older sister, Tina and a younger half brother, Niko. When Kostas was only three years old, his parents divorced and it was arranged for Kostas to stay with his mother and his sister with their father. Luckily, the divorce did not affect Kostas and his sister much, because his parents understood that it was important not to instill negative hostility towards each other in front of the children. Even though he despised being separated from his sister, eventually they were reunited and he always was given love and attention from his large family. As Kostas mother had raised him almost entirely, he has a tremendous weakness and love for her, and he also has a very close bond with the rest of his family.
Kostas was a very active and rambunctious little boy. However, he had the innocence and kindness that made it difficult for his teachers and parents to reprimand him when he would misbehave. From a young age, he was involved in athletics: first swimming and later on basketball. He soon became very passionate about basketball, and eventually became a professional basketball player, participating in tournaments and practicing in the basketball court of Paleon Faliron, almost every day after school.
In the beginning, times were very difficult for Kostas and his mother. In order to make ends meet, his mother had to work two jobs, and unfortunately Kostas spent a lot of time in day cares. Sadly, young Kostas could only watch the neighborhood children buying snacks and other things that a child of his age would desire, since he had no money to buy some of his own. Fortunately, as he grew older, they were much better financially. Kostas would help his parents as much as he could. When he received his first salary from basketball tournaments, he treated his family for dinner and bought a wallet for himself to save his future money. The hard times he went through as a child together with the love of his family, taught him the meaning of life, made him appreciate everything that was given to him and made him the sweet, caring person he is now.
As the years passed, Kostas had grown more and more handsome. His sapphire eyes, sparkling like the Mediterranean sea under the blazing sun, juicy red lips, as soft and sweet as summer cherries, wavy charcoal colored hair and the body of an ancient Greek athlete. Because of his exotic beauty, he was persuaded by his family and friends to get involved in modeling. He worked for an agency called Ace Models and would appear very often in known Greek and foreign magazines. However, because of his young looking face, he would miss out on a lot of modeling jobs, as many wanted him to look older. In general, modeling did not win Kostas heart. The only reason why he continued it was for the spending money. He did not enjoy showing his body as a lifetime career, even though he was a natural in front of the camera. Probably the most rewarding experience Kostas recollects was his photoshoot in the German magazine GQ with the known model Kosta Grekka. He also participated in a cell phone Cosmote commercial which was also very rewarding to him.
However, Kostas felt there was more he should do with his life than just modeling. At that moment, he was known from his friends and family as a professional basketball player, and to them, basketball was his number one true love. However, there was another passion that Kostas had, which all these years he had kept a secret: his tremendous love for singing. Kostas always enjoyed singing but he was too shy to express this love to anyone, not even his family. When his mother and siblings would leave the house, Kostas would quickly turn on the radio and sing over the voices of his favorite Greek singers. However, one day, when his mother was cleaning the house, she heard Kostas singing a song of Antoni Remo as he was lying on his bed with his eyes closed. Kostas had thought that he locked the door and had no idea that his mother was quietly watching and admiring him. She was surprised that he had such an amazing talent that was kept well hidden for so long.
A week later, she decided to approach him about his talent by encouraging him and gradually boosting his confidence. She started off by casually asking him if he could sing that song by Antonis Remos that she overheard him singing a week before. Kostas sang it, and with that he slowly started to get out of his shell and feel more comfortable singing around people. His mother gave him compliments about his voice and let him know that if he loves singing so much, he should follow his dream and never give up.
It was around that time, when he was 22 years old, that his friend encouraged him to take part in a reality talent show, Fame Story. He initially followed a two-month seminar at the Fame Studio in hopes to learn more about singing and gather useful advice from experienced teachers. Unfortunately, despite his tremendous effort and hard work he was not accepted in Fame Story, which disappointed him a great deal.
However, he never gave up and with the help of his friends he entered another talent show, Dreamshow. Fortunately, he was accepted and this made him feel ecstatic. During his time in Dreamshow, Kostas had a big disadvantage amongst his fellow housemates. First of all, Kostas had joined the Dreamshow house in the middle of the season, so the others already knew and felt comfortable with each other. Also, they had all some previous experience with singing while Kostas was just beginning. However, he had also many advantages: his beautiful voice that he was blessed with, his diligence, sweetness and beauty. All these qualities caught peoples attention and it was at that time when he started obtaining many faithful fans.
Unfortunately, at the beginning of his career he was also bombarded with negative criticism by many who were simply jealous of him and the media had labeled him as a copy of Sakis Rouvas, which is a title that he still holds up to this day. Without doubt, all these attacks hurt Kostas tremendously but he learned to keep his head high, ignore them and only focus on his work. Kostas never wanted to be the clone of Sakis Rouvas, nor anyone for that matter; he wanted people to love him for himself and to appreciate his own unique talent. At the Dreamshow house, he made many friends and enchanted everyone with his dedication and laid-back character. The love of his fans, and the positive comments from his judges made him even stronger and believe in himself even more.
Kostas left Dreamshow in fifth place. Even though he deserved more and was not given any monetary award, his reward was much more valuable. He had accepted Ilias Psinakis as his manager, which was a big step indeed because Psinakis is one of the most powerful and influential managers in Greece, and the former manager of Sakis Rouvas and top model, Julia Alexandratou. Kostas will never forget the first comment that Ilias Psinakis made to him: Mr. Martakis, your beauty is not only a blessing but also a curse. In other words, his beauty will attract many people to him, but at the same time others may not take him seriously by looking at him as only a model instead of a talented singer. Because of this, Kostas has persevered and is determined to show to the public his true genuine talent as a singer. In that way, he hopes that people will stop looking at him superficially and start admiring him for the beauty of his voice and soul.
After Dreamshow, Kostas music career advanced in a very short period of time. In October 2006, he released his CD single Panta Mazi, which contained four very successful songs: Panta Mazi (Always Together), YiAfto Hirokrotiste Tin (Thats why you Should Applaud Her), Astous na Lene (Let Them Talk), and Nai (Yes). Before he knew it, his CD was well loved in Greece and even became gold in Cyprus. At around the same time, he made his first live performance with the well known Greek singers, Stamatis Gonidis and Despina Vandi. Kostas will never forget how devoted and protective Despina was to him. She helped him tremendously in making his first steps in his blossoming career. She taught him all he needed to know and would back him up when he would make mistakes on stage. In December 2006, Kostas continued his partnership with Despina and sang with her at the nightclub Rex, together with Giorgo Mazonaki. In addition, when Despina organized a concert for a philanthropic purpose, she invited Kostas to sing in the opening.
In June 2007, Kostas very first completed work circulated all over the country and Cyprus. His CD, Anatropi (Inversion) became a hit almost immediately, and six out his fifteen songs became successes. Those songs include:
1. Anatropi: as shown in the video clip, is a love story about a girl making an inversion and coming back to her lover, to give him a second chance. The videoclip combines Kostas angelic innocence with the sexiness of an erotic lover as he reunites with the girl of his dreams. This song reminds Kostas mainly of the big inversion he had made to conquer his fear of singing in front of people and to live his dream as a singer.
2. Nai: is another pop-rock love song, where in the videoclip Kostas is in a studio singing with great emotion, shouting yes to the woman he loves, telling her that shes the only one.
3. Thelo Epigontos Diakopes: is an ultimate summer song. The videoclip was shot at a beautiful beach in Lagonissi, as Kostas talks about his desire to go on a vacation to get away from the city, relax on golden beaches and swim under the moonlight. However, ever since Kostas started his career, he lost the desire to go on vacation, since he enjoys his career so much, and feels like since hes young now, this is the best time to work while vacations can wait.
His three other hit songs were: Oneira Megala, talking about his big dreams, YiAfto Hirokrotiste Tin (from a well known Italian song) and Astous na Lene, which is a song dedicated to those who are against him and do not appreciate his talent. The song simply says to ignore such criticisms and jealousies, to keep your head high, follow your heart and not to worry what others tell you. It seems like this song describes Kostas fully. These songs were written by renowned composers such as Dimitris Kontopoulos, and lyricists such as Vicki Gerothodorou, Eleana Vrachali and many others. Evidently, Kostas felt very honored to have so many talented people willing to write songs for his very first CD.
In July 2007, Kostas gave his very first concert in Cyprus, at the castle of Pafos in front of 7.500 people. In the same month, he took part at the Mad Awards and received the award as the Best New Performer and also surprised and amazed the crowd with his extremely sexy and daring duet of the song Summer Wine, with Maro Litra. Around that time, he also took part in the Mad Secret Concert and sang the well known hit Kommatia with Christos Dantis.
In the summer of 2007, Kostas was performing at the bouzoukia Romeo, together with Dionisis Makris, Nikos Apergis, Vanessa Adamopoulou and Kelly Kelekidou. It was a very warm environment for Kostas since Dionisis Makris and Nikos Apergis were old friends from Dreamshow and Kelly Kelekidou was very friendly to him as well. At the end of August 2007, he took a break from Romeo and spent a month at Boom in Thessaloniki, singing together with very well known singers such as Peggy Zina, Christos Dantis, Gianna Terzi and Zazopoulo. Afterwards, in the winter he returned to Romeo and continued singing there until January 7th.
In the fall of the same year, Kostas was chosen out of the 1000 nominees to represent Greece at the Small Eurovision Contest, New Wave, which is located at Jurmala, Latvia. Even though this contest was mainly dedicated to countries of the Eastern Block, Kostas achieved stunningly good results: he was awarded fifth place out of the 18 nominees, second place in Televoting and won the special prize of the reporters. Kostas audience and fellow performers in Jurmala were amazed by his impeccable performances of his three songs: Souvenirs, Pedia tou Pirea and People are Talking, the latter being a translated version of his Greek hit song Astous na Lene. Despite the challenging English verse, Kostas did a very good job in his pronunciation while simultaneously following the difficult steps of his choreography to perfection.
After Kostas performance in Jurmala, Kostas became very well loved and known in Russia and other Eastern Block countries. Many people in these countries fell in love with Kostas beauty and talent and he gradually won fans all over those places. As a result, in November 2007, he signed a contract with Sony BMG Russia in order to make an album in the future which would contain Russian and English songs and would circulate all over the Eastern Block. While he was in Russia signing this very important contract, he also shot his videoclip Oneira Megala in the heart of Moscow. Interestingly, he was the first Greek singer who was given the permission to sing in the historical places of Moscow such as the KremlinPalace, the Red Square, and the Temple of Saint Basil. Therefore, Kostas started his attempt in having an international career. All of Kostas videoclips would play very often in channels of Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania and his name is well known all over the Eastern Block. A few months later, Kostas also participated in the Mad Secret Concert in Bulgaria and sang the hit song Every Breath You Take together with the well known Bulgarian singer, Graffa. He was immediately loved by everyone there.
In December 2007, Kostas was given a very appealing and important offer. He was chosen together with Chrispa and Kalomoira as a nominee for representing Greece in the upcoming Eurovision 2008. After much deliberation, Kostas and his managers chose the song Always and Forever to compete with in the contest. He chose this song because he personally liked it and also because he believed that it would be very successful in the countries outside Greece. He also wanted to prove to the world that Greece can be successful in the Eurovision contest by being different and by not necessarily following the norm of having a song with ethnic qualities. The composer of his song was Dimitris Kontopoulos, and the lyricist was Vicki Gerothodorou. Even though he was unfortunately not chosen for Eurovision, he had many doors waiting for him to open. After competing in the 2008 preliminary Eurovision contest he was quickly recognized even more throughout the world.
After Eurovision, Kostas accepted the offer to sing at a nightclub in Glyfada (a suburb of Athens) called Asteria. He was working together with Eirini Merkouri and Kostas Karafotis. Every night was magical, as Kostas would sing a combination of his own and other hit songs with his beautiful voice, so much enthusiasm and positive energy. After each nightly performance, his fans would come to his dressing room and have the opportunity to visit him up close, take a picture with him and get his autograph. Kostas loves all his fans and always welcomes them in his dressing room with open arms. Some people who initially had a negative predisposition of Kostas, no longer thought of him in that way after they met him up close. Everyone who saw him loved him immediately! His down-to-earth character, warmness, and amazing sense of humor would make everyone feel comfortable around him.
On July 12, 2008 Kosta completed his performances at Asteria and for the rest of the summer he made tours all around Greece. He had amazing Amita Motion concerts in Patra, Thessaloniki, Crete and Athens and had also performed in a number of clubs and concerts in Kilkis, Crete, Halkidiki, Kalamata, Pyrgos, Igoumenitsa, Serres, Florina and Cyprus. On September 20, 2008 Kostas will have the honor to sing in the opening of Jennifer Lopezs concert in the OAKA stadium in Athens.
In July 2008 Kostas released his very new song Fila Me (from the original song Torre de Babel by David Bisbal) and his videoclip in which he is a beduin dancing with his choreographer Irina Matzourova in fields and beaches. Also, shortly his English-Russian CD will circulate in the Eastern Block countries with his Russian version of Always and Forever being one of the hit songs. At the same time, he is preparing in the studio his second CD album which will circulate in the shops of Greece and Cyprus at the end of October.
At the present time, Kostas is fulfilling his obligation to his country by serving in the Greek navy for nine months. He will complete his service in May of 2009. Although he will be away from his singing career for many months, he will continue his devotion to singing and he will have the opportunity during his breaks to perform in concerts and be a guest in various morning Greek TV shows.
In just a couple of years, Kostas Martakis has achieved so much in his singing career. In this short period of time, he has been adored all over the world, because everyone can see that he has a genuine talent and love for singing. He has a bright and fulfilling future ahead of him and we hope that this young star will continue to surprise us with more of his outstanding accomplishments.
